As the name implies, these vests feature moulded polycarbonate protective panels which offer exceptional edged weapon and blunt force trauma (being struck with an object such as a piece of wood or metal pipe etc) protection. They are available in a range of panel densities combined with different carriers.
Hard shell vests feature moulded polycarbonate protective panels that form a protective shell around the torso of the wearer.
These vests offer exceptional protection against edged weapons (cutting, slashing and stabbing) but where they really come into their own is in terms of the blunt force trauma protection they offer as the impact of the strike is spread across the surface of the protective panel of the vest meaning there is far less fluid shock transfer into the body of the wearer. They also offer excellent protection against needles.
With soft shell, kevlar-type vests, the the shock wave from a strike with a weapon partly travels into the wearer's body. They also do not protect as well against needle penetration. However, they do not offer any ballistic protection and while lighter than Kevlar vests can be less comfortable to wear.
The protective panels are available in either 3mm or 5mm thickness versions. The 5mm version is certified to KR1 (knife resistant level 1) protection level which is an international standard.
The 3mm version is not certified but still offers very good edged weapon and blunt force trauma protection, but is cheaper and as it is lighter is ideal for wearing in a covert carrier as it is less visible - ideal for door security staff or where staff want to be more discreet.
Hard shell panels have a longer life than soft shell, which are normally only certified for five years.
They are available in sizes XS to 6XL and can also be custom made for individuals.
Hard shell panels can be worn in a range of carriers from covert to overt, tabard and customised with additional pockets and attachments.
Hard shell panels and carriers range from $1395.00 plus GST for 3mm KRB panels in a covert carrier to $1895.00 plus GST for 5mm KR1 panels in an overt Hi-Vis carrier.
